A Thriving Career: Matt Robbins

Meet Matt Robbins, CFO at Action Property Management, and discover how family, teamwork, creativity, and a love of the outdoors shape his approach to leadership.

For the most part, finance and accounting are areas that lack a tangible product. They live in a world of the abstract, where numbers create solutions and those solutions reside in the mind of the beholder. As a knowledge worker, Matt Robbins, Chief Financial Officer at Action Property Management, has lived in this world for his entire professional life.

But professional accomplishments are just one small factor of who he is. The task of balancing work, family, outdoor interests, creativity, and church commitments keeps Matt’s life both full and rewarding. Zoom meetings fail to capture the stature of this married father of five. At six-feet eight-inches tall, Matt often stands out in a crowd.

Though he worked his way through college on a basketball scholarship, standing out physically isn’t his main goal. Rather, Matt seeks to stand out by giving every task his best effort.

Guided by a sense of adventure, following graduation from Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida, Matt ventured west, ultimately landing in Southern California. Not long after his arrival, he met his wife at a church event that led to his life changing in more ways than one.

With a deep-rooted dedication to his family, Matt now enjoys spending time at home with his wife and kids, but he also relishes the opportunity to fuel his outdoor interests as well as his creative side.

After hours, Matt likes to get away on his mountain bike, soaking up the beauty of nature while also enjoying the vigor of the sport.

During less strenuous times, he finds satisfaction in his wood shop. As a naturally analytical person, Matt can appreciate the engineering aspects of his hobby while also applying his creative skills to his projects. As a matter of fact, most of the furniture in Matt’s home has been built by his own two hands.

While woodworking is often a solitary hobby, in his professional life, Matt values a team approach. “I’ve been on really great teams and not so great teams,” he said, reflecting back on his years overseeing financial and operational aspects of a large real estate company. He went on to explain that the key to teamwork is everyone knowing their roles and then performing them with excellence.

“If you have everyone’s back and you know your role, you can accomplish a lot.”

Matt’s years on the basketball court shaped his early vision of a team while his subsequent business experience helped him fine tune his definition of teamwork. He summed it all up by saying, “If you have everyone’s back and you know your role, you can accomplish a lot.”

Prior to joining Action, Matt had the backs of of his teammates as Senior Vice President for a large real estate company that specialized in residential property management. In that position he played a pivotal role in merging two companies together and was instrumental in the new company experiencing exponential growth.

As that monumental task wound down, he felt the need to move on in his career and was introduced to Action CEO, Matthew Holbrook, by a mutual friend. Matt made a very strong first impression and was ultimately offered a position with Action. Though his exact role wasn’t immediately clear, Matthew knew that Matt would be an exceptional addition to the team and together they defined how he would best fit into the company.

Though his financial expertise runs deep, he also loves the operational side of business, thus making him a versatile addition to the Action team. Today his role is diverse, focusing much of his time on the financial side, but also filling key operational roles as well.

From the moment he was first connected with Action, it become clear that Matt had much more than just a skillset to offer the company. He was a culture fit. He shared the vision and values that propel Action forward each day. Whether it’s caring about people, working as a team, or valuing excellence, Matt embodies the things that make Action unique.

He also knows that a thriving career is more than just showing up at work each morning and giving it your all. For Matt, achieving a truly thriving career involves carefully integrating the profession with both family and personal interests. It’s not always an easy task, but, it’s an endeavor that has truly changed his home…especially the furniture.
